NMR Instrumentation
❖ NMR instrument is composed of the following parts:
1. Sample holder (thin glass tube).
2. Magnet: It generates magnetic field.
3. Magnet controller: It helps in providing a homogenous magnetic field.
4. Radiofrequency (RF) transmitter: It produces a short pulse of the electromagnetic waves
with a frequency range of up to 1200 MHz (the strongest NMR instrument manufactured till
2024).
5. RF detector: It helps in detecting radio frequencies.
6. Recording system: A computer that records the NMR signals which are received by the
detector.
❖ NMR spectrum: It is a graph showing various NMR peaks of different atoms (with
NMR-active nuclei); each peak has a certain shape (multiplicity), certain area under a
curve (integration), and appeared at certain position on the scale called chemical shift
(in ppm).
