               my mom had a
               quilt like that

Star, 4-Pointed, or String Star, or Hummingbird 1930s (sold as 1920s feedsacks). eBay purchase. 64½”x82”.
Fabric: Very wide variety of cotton prints and some plain white as loose as cheesecloth. Batting: Light,
cotton. Backing: Cotton print. Edge: Back to front ¼” caught by hand. Piecing: By hand. Quilting: By hand,
clamshell pattern, 4 stitches per inch. Condition: Acceptable; two blocks at the center of one end contain
substantial renovations, two center blocks on the other end contain a few renovations. Slight fading and
batting shift are typical of its age. Comment: A similar pattern appears in Ruby McKim’s 1931 publication
101 Quilt Patterns, pp 36-37 under the name “String Star,” except that the corners within her pattern blocks
are filled with single-colored block centers and regular-sized stripes in repetitive colors. By contrast, this
quilt has stars of various colors and stripes in widely varying widths and colors. McKim calls for piecing
blocks side by side with no banding, which creates a secondary pattern of octagons which we can see in
other quilts in this collection. The use of scraps of many colors makes this a true scrap quilt from the era of
               its making.
