Redwork in a Maze. 1927 (dated). eBay purchase in 2012. 76"x89" Fabric: Cotton. Batting: Thin. Backing: Cot-
ton. Edge: A red tape ¼" to each side has been machine stitched to the front and caught by hand in back.
Piecing: By machine. Quilting: By hand, 7 stitches to the inch, in clamshells plus Xs in the intersections
of the reds. Condition: Good. There are three small pops in the red, which is turkey red left over from an
earlier era. Comment: Redwork, red embroidery outline designs, many of which are commercial patterns, is
a popular subcategory of quit tops by itself. I have never cared for it, but chose this to be an exemplar for a
collection that is a broad survey of American quilting. I like it better for having a maze around the blocks.
The mazes are imperfectly joined.
