               my mom had a
               quilt like that

Amish Log Cabin from the Rebecca Haarer Collection No later than 1930s. Purchased at a Monroe, WA, antique
show in 1992. "handyman’s quilt" size. 50"x78" Fabric: Cotton. Batting: Thin if any. Backing: Pale blue-green
cotton. Edge: Cotton machine stitched to front and caught by hand on the back. Piecing: By machine. Quilt-
ing: By hand 5 stitches per inch in white thread. Condition: Excellent; a few faint brown spots are appearing
but the quilt feels unused and unwashed. Comment: The vendor she had chased it 15 years before from the
original collector, Rebecca Haarer, whose parents had lived and worked in the Amish/Mennonite commu-
nity of Shippewana, IA since the 1920s. Some of her collection appear in Amish quilt books. The adjacent
blocks of mixed blue and tan appear to be misassembly of the blocks, moving 2 tans to the blue and vice
versa. The remaining tan stripe in blue may be just running out of fabric, since blues aren’t known to fade
               this dramatically.
