Silo
GENERAL INSPECTION
General status of silo
INCLUDES:
▪ Walk around the silo and inspect the outside of the silo for irregularities.
▪ Internal inspections inside the silo must be carried out at least every 5 years.
GOOD PRACTICE
▪ Establish some vertical sectors all along the silo to be covered visually. Let your
eyes go up and down the wall visually. Binoculars may also be used.
▪ Use stair towers and neighboring buildings or MEWP to approach the inspected
silo.
▪ Mark critical findings directly on the silo structure.
▪ Inspect the silo substructure including supporting columns, internal and external
walls and the underside of the bottom of the silo compartment
REMARKS (for internal inspections)
▪ Internal access and inspection shall follow the requirements of the LH silo cleaning
handbook.
▪ The inside wall surface should be cleaned with a steel brush or similar at 2 or 4
locations. (ref: 1m high X 5m wide at each location).
▪ If critical defects are detected, a repetition of an internal inspection shall be done
the following year or maximum after 2 years depending on the rating of the
observed defects.
▪ Consider the use of new technologies like drones to avoid the need of having to go
inside the silo.
