Silo
INSPECTION OF SILO STEEL WALLS
Steel Shell
INCLUDES:
▪ Measurement of steel sheets thickness and degradation by corrosion and abrasion
GOOD PRACTICE
▪ Log mapping and physical marking of the measured points to facilitate their
location in future inspections.
▪ Consider ultrasonic testing or other non destructive test (NDT) to assess the
thickness of the metallic shell in different points
Joints
INCLUDES:
▪ Welded joints: Check for wear, cracks,
corrosion and flaws
▪ Bolted joints:
o Check for missing, loose or corroded bolts
and nuts
o Inspection of leakage in joints
GOOD PRACTICE
▪ Use steel brush to remove dust, coating or
painting in the inspected area. Old cracks are
typically covered with dirt or dust.
▪ If needed, bolts must be replaced or changed
for others of higher quality and capabilities.
REMARKS
▪ Inspecting the internal weld may require the silo to be emptied.
▪ The vibration caused by the feeding or fluidification equipment can lead to cracks in
welded connections.
▪ Cracked welds or lost bolts at joints indicate that the joints are overstressed. Silo
design calculations shall be verified.
▪ Leakages in joints (bolted or welded) must be further investigated (might be an early
sign of joint failure).
