INSPECTION OF CONCRETE WALLS
Concrete Spalling
INCLUDES:
▪ Mapping the location of defects.
▪ Attention to the depth of the defect, exposure
and corrosion of rebar.
▪ Concrete cover measurement.
GOOD PRACTICE
▪ Remove defected or delaminated concrete
cover and check condition of rebar.
▪ Check the wall surface by tapping with a
hammer to detect delamination or hollow
areas under the concrete cover.
REMARKS
▪ Spalling indicates overload or progressing
corrosion of reinforcing steel bars.
(= structural integrity is compromised).
CATEGORIZATION:
Concrete spalling and exposed rebar LFF= B (Likely) or A (Almost Certain)
Expert Assessments must be triggered
Concrete Carbonation
INCLUDES:
▪ Check for adequate
concrete cover if there
is presence of severe
carbonation signs
REMARKS:
▪ Normally carbonation front reaches a maximum depth of 15-20mm after 20 years of
concrete service (approx.)
