Silo
GENERAL INSPECTION
Evaluation and rating
ACTION:
▪ Numerous defects in the same area (concrete spalling, accumulation of cracks,
corroded area) must trigger Expert Assessment.
GOOD PRACTICE
▪ Inspection results and adopted actions shall be duly reported.
▪ Efficiency of previous reparations shall be also assessed during the Annual
Assessments. Always compare results with previous Assessments
REMARKS (for internal inspections)
▪ Preventive maintenance protocol establishing which silo components to evaluate and which
inspection criteria to be use shall be implemented as part of routine maintenance.
▪ Cement dust, coating or painting may cover the occurrence of large cracks and defects.
Emergency control measures
ACTION:
▪ Implement immediate emergency corrective actions for Critical situations
GOOD PRACTICE – emergency controls
▪ Filling degree of silo to be immediately lowered (i.e. to 50%).
▪ Control and restriction access implementation.
▪ Expert Assessment triggered.
Categorization
▪ Big pieces of spalling concrete from the inside or outside of the silo wall with exposed
rebar in high corroded status at least LFF = B (Likely). Expert Assessment
must be triggered.
▪ Wear, fractures, cracks, deformations, etc. shall follow the rating criteria of Expert
Assessments guidance.
REMARKS
▪ Critical or extreme condition of a silo shall be immediately reported and Expert Assessment
triggered.
▪ Selection of silo expert to be validated by Group or regional champion. (refer to 3rd party
Civil Engineering service providers list)
▪ Silo Expert Assessment shall determine whether 50% silo filling degree can be maintained or
can be modified.
