Silo
INSPECTION OF SILO ROOF
INCLUDES:
▪ General: Checking for signs of deformation or deterioration.
▪ Prefab concrete: Displacement of concrete parts composing the concrete cone
and existence of gaps that could lead to water entrance.
▪ Casted concrete: Checking for concrete defects categorized as per Annual
Assessment guide – Concrete
▪ Cladding: General condition: signs of deterioration, deformation, corrosion,
missing bolts
▪ Sliding supports:
o Assessment if sliding support was erected as per original design.
o Sliding surfaces shall be free of material or other obstacles that could restrict
their movement.
▪ Roof beam pockets: Checking for spalling or flaking concrete.
▪ Sealing: Good conditions and efficiency of sealing and water entrance
GOOD PRACTICE:
▪ Silo roof must be clean and free of stored materials.
▪ Keep a good level of cleanliness and maintenance of the slide supports.
▪ Consider the use of new technologies and techniques like inspection by drones.
REMARKS:
▪ Accumulation of material can compromise the structural integrity of a silo roof and
can lead to its collapse.
▪ Slide supports for structures are sometimes not easily accessible. Access to the
interior of silo could be needed.
▪ Excessive deterioration of beam pockets can further expose the beams and
increase the chance of roof failure or collapse.
▪ Water penetration can lead to corrosion of metal silo components like roof beams.
▪ Leaking roofs can lead to contamination of stored materials (cement, clinker,
gypsum..) and create buildups that limits the flow of material through the silo.
