Chapter 2

Secret Journey to New Zealand

There was nothing left to hold me back so I decided
to take a huge leap into the unknown and go to New
Zealand. I was determined to plead my case, that I was
the perfect candidate for their Doctorate program. I
figured if I went in person, somehow I could convince
them to reinstate me into the program. I had nothing to
lose, so why not?

I swore my cousin to secrecy making up a story for
my Aunt Cindy and Uncle Mike that I would be going
to northern California to stay with some friends for
about 3-4 weeks. We would be camping and out of
range, so they shouldn’t expect to hear from me.
It just wasn’t worth the emotional blow back I knew
I would get. Aunty and Uncle bought the story and now
I had some time to figure things out.
With all my insecurities raging, I still jumped on
that plane for the overnight flight out of Los Angeles to
Auckland, New Zealand.

The flight was turbulent and my apprehensive
white-knuckle flying didn’t go unnoticed. I must have
looked pretty pathetic.
