The charm of the flight attendants was calming.
One in particular took me under her wing. She reached
out to me and I wound up pouring my heart out to her
in the back of the plane while everyone else slept.
Almost without taking a breath, I rambled on about
…. my mother’s obsessive overprotective nature and
that I was the product of a one night stand when she
was a crazy young woman traveling the world; how
mom’s death had sent me into a tailspin; and finally,
how I was going to a country I knew nothing about, but
determined to be re-accepted to a Doctoral program
that was more than likely already filled.
My state of mind was rather scattered, but there was
something in her way that truly comforted me and I
definitely loved her accent.
As the plane began to descend, my new stewardess
friend, Tami, let me know that we would be landing at
Tamaki Makaurau - the Maori name for Auckland, the
biggest city in New Zealand; otherwise known as
Aotearoa – ‘land of the long white cloud.’
