We finally made it out of Auckland city, over the
Bombay Hills, and down into the small town of Pokeno.
From here I was on my own. As he got of the car, Pita
pointed me south and presumably in the right direction
to Palmerston North.
Onwards to my doctorate.
With maps in hand, I said goodbye to Pita.
“Adios!”
I felt like I was in the Wild West and had just been
let loose to roam the prairie on my own.
In those first few moments as I drove away, I felt
that being alone was going to be a lot tougher than I
could have imagined and that even Pita’s rude and
harsh way of talking to me was going to be missed.
I pulled myself together and drove off into the
sunset on a much less busy, country-like road. Well,
actually I had a few hours until sunset.
I could see dark cloudy skies on the horizon in the
distance which I hoped would dissipate. My target
location for the night was a youth hostel named,
Havenlee, which I saw in a flyer I had picked up at the
Auckland Airport.
