Chapter 11
The Second Date
While the Professor was on his greenstone
adventure, Pita and I were horseback riding. It was a
glorious day.
As we wandered the trails of the lower Whanganui
River, Pita pointed out two mountains in the distance.
His family stilled lived halfway up one of the
mountains. His grandparents, parents and two brothers
had built their homes there and one day he planned to
do the same.
He asked me about my family and I told him about
my mother’s recent death and my small intimate family
of my Aunt, Uncle, cousin and her husband. It was
quite a contrast to his large extended family. I swear, he
had more cousins than seemed possible for such a small
country.
He asked about my father and I told him I knew
nothing about him. He seemed to be my mother’s deep
dark secret and she took her reason for silence to the
grave with her.
As we continued our ride, a little creature darted
out and startled my horse. Frightened, it bolted, started
running like hell, jumping a small fence and nearly
