The silence was broken when Miss Grace
announced she was ready to go. The Professor was
quite happy that this part of the trip was over and
expressed quite gleefully that we might even have the
time to stop for breakfast.
Unfortunately, that wasn’t in the cards, Miss Grace
asked that we make one more stop. So in spite of the
scowl on the Professor’s face, we dutifully got into our
car and drove off following Aroha and Miss Grace.
While I was venturing into the unknown with this strange
Maori grandmother, my cousin and her husband had
just landed in Auckland on their mission to save me.
Once we got to our destination Miss Grace
requested that I go with her and she led me down a
narrow path. For the first time my attention was drawn
to details of her very ornately carved tokotoko (walking
stick) and I began to feel very uncomfortable.
But then I was distracted by the sound of a car door
and noticed as I looked back that the Professor had
gotten out of the car and appeared to be anxiously
fidgeting with his phone.
