3. Parts of Speech

Words are divided into different kinds called ‘parts of speech’ according to the work they do in a
sentence. The parts of speech are eight in number :

1. Noun 5. Adverb

4. Verb 8. Interjection

1. Noun : A noun is a word used as the name of a person, place or thing.

Examples : (i) Mumbai is a big city.

(ii) The table is made of wood.

All that you can see, feel, hear, touch, think or smell and have names are nouns.

2. Pronoun : A pronoun is a word used instead of a noun.

Examples : (i) Aryan sold his new mobile.

(ii) Neha is absent because she is ill.

3. Adjective : An adjective is a word that modifies a noun or a pronoun to make it more specific.

Examples : (i) There are many trees in the garden.

(ii) He is an honest man.

4. Verb : A verb is the part of speech that describes an action, occurrence or indicates a state of
being.

(ii) They are eating fruits.
5. Adverb : An adverb is a word to add something to the meaning of a verb, adjective or another
verb.
