BJP Wins 8 seats, Samajwadi Party Two In Rajya Sabha
Polls In U ar Pradesh
The BJP orchestrated a remarkable victory by securing an
additional seat in the Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh today,
receiving support from Jayant Chaudhary's Rashtriya Lok Dal
and a faction of Samajwadi Party rebels. Out of the state's 10
seats, the BJP clinched eight, while the Samajwadi Party,
anticipating three, managed to secure only two.
The second bonus seat for the BJP was secured in Congress-
ruled Himachal Pradesh through cross-voting by six Congress
MLAs.
In Uttar Pradesh, the BJP triggered an election by nominating
an eighth candidate for the state's 10 seats. The initial projection indicated that seven seats would go to the
BJP and three to the Samajwadi Party. However, even before the voting, BJP leaders confidentially
asserted that several Samajwadi Party MLAs would cross-vote, with estimates ranging from 7 to 10.
The actual voting unfolded with suspense and drama, as seven members of the Samajwadi Party cross-
voted, and the vote of one SP MLA was deemed invalid. Following the voting, five Samajwadi Party MPs
held discussions with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
The victorious BJP candidates include former Union Minister RPN Singh, former MP Chaudhary Tejveer
Singh, Amarpal Maurya, Sangeeta Balwant, BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi, former MLA Sadhna
Singh, Naveen Jain, and Sanjay Seth. Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party's Jaya Bachchan and Ramji Lal
Suman secured wins, while Alok Ranjan, the third Samajwadi Party candidate, lost to the BJP.
BJP's Rajya Sabha Stunner In Himachal
In a surprising turn of events for the Congress, the BJP achieved an
unexpected victory in the single Rajya Sabha seat in Himachal
Pradesh, despite possessing only 25 MLAs in the 68-member
Assembly. The BJP's success resulted from cross-voting by Congress
MLAs and a fortuitous draw of lots that favored the BJP.
The repercussions of this loss extend beyond a mere dent in the
Congress's prestige. It poses a significant challenge as the party is
now poised to undergo a critical test in passing the Budget on
Wednesday, thereby jeopardizing its government in Himachal
Pradesh, one of the three states it governs independently. Adding to the Congress's predicament is the
proximity of the Lok Sabha elections, just weeks away.
