Gaganyaan: ISRO reveals four astronauts for India’s first
human spaceflight mission
On Tuesday, India's space agency unveiled the four
astronauts-designate who are undergoing training for the
country's inaugural human spaceflight mission scheduled for
2025. Prime Minister Narendra Modi bestowed "wings" upon
the four astronauts-designate, all of whom are test pilots from
the Indian Air Force, during a ceremony at the Vikram
Sarabhai Space Centre in Thiruvananthapuram. These wings,
worn as badges on the chest, symbolize their designation.
The four pilots include Group Captain Prasanth Balakrishnan
Nair, Group Captain Ajit Krishnan, Group Captain Angad
Pratap, and Wing Commander Shubhanshu Shukla. Their extensive training included a year at the Yuri
Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre in Moscow (2020-21), where they focused on studies related to
parabolic flights, orbital mechanics, astro-navigation, and survival training in diverse environments such as
snow, water, and steppes. Subsequently, they returned to Bangalore and have been undergoing further
training at facilities operated by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
