15. The Conjunction





          A conjunction       is a joining word that joins words, phrases or sentences together.


          Some examples of conjunctions are as follows :

                  1.     I love chocolate and       ice-cream.


                                                       or
                  2.     What will you have tea  coffee?

                  3.     Shruti is tall but   Saumya is short.

                  4.     Try and try until    you succeed.


                  5.     They are happy though          they are poor.


                 In  sentence  ( ),  ‘and        ’  joins  two  words  ‘chocolate’  and  ‘ice-cream’.

          In sentence ( ), ‘ ’ joins two words ‘tea’ and ‘coffee’. In sentence (3)                 , ‘but ’ joins two
          sentences ‘Shruti is tall’ and ‘Samya is short’. In sentence (4)                     , ‘until ’ joins two
          sentences ‘try and try’ and ‘you succeed’. In sentence (5)                       , ‘though    ’ joins two

          sentences ‘ hey are happy’ and ‘ hey are poor’.

          This means that the words and             , or , but , until  and though     are joining words. They

          are called conjunctions.

          Let us understand why we use conjunctions :


                  And           –       (i)  I like fruits and    vegetables.

                                       (ii)  Neha and       Rekha have gone to Delhi.


                  But            –      (i)  We played well but         lost the match.


                                       (ii)  She is eating the food but          not drink milk.

                  Or            –       (i)  Was the girl thin      or fat?
