a) Definition
             News item is a text which informs readers about events of the day. The events are considered
             newsworthy or important.
             It means if there is an important event that should be known by many people, then this event
             deserves news. Well, the news text is called the news item text. However, if there are events that

             people do not deserve, then they are not definitely worth to be news.
             b) Social Function
             News Item Text is used :
             • To inform readers about events of the day which are considered newsworthy or important.
             • To inform the readers about newsworthy or important events of the day.
             • To present information the readers about newsworthy or important events of the day


             c) Structure of the text
             1) Newsworthy event(s): it recounts the event in summary form.
             2) Background event(s): they elaborate what happened, to whom, in what circumstance
             3) Source(s) : it contains comments by participants in, witnesses to and authorities expert on the
             event

             d) Language Features
             • The use past tense
                e.g. : Alyssa Diva Mustika won the gold medal at the International Matematics Contest held in
                           Romania.

             • The use of action verbs
                e.g. : go, walk, run, drive, ride, kill.

             • The use of saying verbs… (tell, reply, say, answer)
             • The use of passive sentences
             - The three victims were found by SAR team in Banda Aceh.
             - The whole village was swept away by tsunami last year.

             • The use of direct and indirect speech
                 e g. The agency also said that victims were mainly residents … .
             • The use of adverbs of manner
                e.g. happily, fast, hard, slowly.

             • The use of adverbs of time and place
                e.g. one day, yesterday, after the lesson, in the classrom, at school.

             • Adjectives to form noun phrases
                e.g. beautiful, sunny day, a large green field, asoft, white sandy beach.
             • Conjunctions to link sentences

                e.g.  and, but, so, because, for, or.
             • The use of time connectives
                e.g. after that, meanwhile, then, finally, next, the next morning.

             • Pronouns
                e.g. he, she, they, them. his, it.                                                             9
