Chapter 1:- Israel’s Failure And The Results.
Israel’s failure in mingling with the Canaanites.
The question and the answer. [1:1-4]
Adoni-Bezek. [1:5-7]
Jerusalem. [1:8]
Judah’s victory and failure. [1:9-20]
The children of Benjamin and their failure. [1:21]
The failures of others. [1:22-36]
The book begins with an inquiry of the lord. This was immediately after Joshua’s death. From
chapter 2:7-10 we learn that the people served the lord during the days of Joshua and the elders
who had seen the great works of the lord and who outlived their leaders.
Israel looked to the lord for guidance. They feel their dependence upon him. And the lord
answered their inquiry as he always delights to answer those who put their trust in him.
Judah is to go up and fight against the Canaanites and the lord promises him victory. But Judah
settles for asking for help from the Simeonites instead of going it alone with the full confidence
acquired from God’s answer to his prayer.
In asking for help both tribes become successful in their war efforts but again their lack of faith
in God shows up when they could not totally purge the land of its inhabitants.
