In Judges 1:8 we see an interesting connection between this verse and the words in Joshua10:1.
[Joshua 10:1]
When Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem heard how Joshua had taken Ai and had utterly destroyed
it and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made
peace with Israel and were among then.
The same city mentioned in Joshua 10:1 … Jerusalem is burned to the ground and smitten with
swords.
Then there is story of Caleb one of the 12 spies sent forth to look over the Land of Canaan and
who contradicted the report of the other 10 spies who gave a negative outlook of their situation
by saying, “We are well able to take the land. Let us go up against it and take it”
In chapter 1 of Judges we see yet another parallel passage with the one found in Joshua 15:16-19
in which we see the story of Caleb Othniel and Achsah [Jud. 1:12-15]
Caleb’s Land
Joshua 15:13-19:-
Vv 13 Joshua gave Caleb some land among the people of Judah as God had told him to do.
Caleb’s share was Hebron which at the time was Arba’s Town because Arba was the ancestor of
the Anakim.
Vv 14 Caleb attacked Hebron and forced the Anakim clans of Sheshai Ahiman and Talmai to
leave.
Vv 15 Next Caleb started a war with the town of Debir which at the time was called
Keriath-Sepher.
Vv 16 He told his men, “The man who captures Keriath-Sepher can marry my daughter Achsah”
Vv 17 Caleb’s nephew Othniel captured Keriath-Sepher snd Caleb let him marry his daughter.
Vv 18 Right after the wedding Achsah started telling Othniel that he ought to ask her father for a
field. She went to see her father and while she was getting down from her donkey Caleb asked
her, “What’s bothering you?”
Vv 19 She answered, “I need your help. The land you gave me is in the Southern Desert so I
really need some springs fed ponds for a water supply. Caleb gave her a couple of small ponds
named Higher Pond and Lower Pond”
