L ES S ON NOUNS
6
A noun is a fundamental part of speech in English and serves as the name
for a person, place, thing, idea, or quality. It is a word that identifies and
represents people, objects, concepts, or places in a sentence. Nouns play
various roles in language, functioning as subjects, objects, or modifiers
within sentences.
Here are some key points to understand about nouns:
1. Types of Nouns:
Common Nouns: They refer to general, non-specific people, places,
things, or ideas. For example: cat, city, book.
Proper Nouns: They are specific names of people, places, or things
and are capitalized. For example: John, London, Coca-Cola.
Concrete Nouns: They represent physical objects that can be
perceived through the senses. For example: table, dog, flower.
Abstract Nouns: They denote concepts, ideas, or qualities that cannot
be experienced through the senses. For example: love, happiness,
justice.
2. Noun Functions in Sentences:
Subject: The noun that performs the action or is the topic of the
sentence. For example: "The dog barks loudly."
Object: The noun that receives the action of the verb or is affected by
it. For example: "She kicked the ball."
Modifier: The noun that describes or provides additional information
about another noun. For example: "The blue car."
3. Plural and Singular Forms:
Nouns can have both singular and plural forms. The plural is
generally formed by adding "s" or "es" to the singular noun. For
example: cat/cats, box/boxes.
Some nouns have irregular plural forms. For example: mouse/mice,
child/children.
