Adverbial phrase is a group of words that functions as an adverb in a sentence.
It provides additional information about the verb, adjective, or adverb in the
sentence, modifying or describing its meaning. Adverbial phrases often answer
questions such as how, when, where, why, or to what extent. This extra
information gives the reader more detail, so they can gain more insight and
context about what’s happening in a text.
Some examples of adverbial phrases we might encounter often are in a while,
after school, it is everyday, very quickly, in the classroom, because they're
happy, it went badly.
The Typ e s
Before getting into the types of adverbial phrases, we must first recognize the
types of adverbs in English. There are 5 important adverbs that we usually use
in sentences, such as: adverbs of time, manner, place, frequency, and purpose.
Based on its formation, the adverbial phrase is divided into 2, that are:
1. Adverb with Qualifier
An adverb phrase that is a combination of an adverb with a qualifier can
occupy the function of an adverb of manner. Example:
He drives extremely (adverb) slowly (qualifier).
Every waitress should clean tables quickly (adverb) enough (qualifier).
2. Prepositional Phrase
Prepositional phrases can replace the five most important adverbial phrases
above. Some adverbial phrase examples of prepositional phrases are as
follows.
Time
There are several examples of words that can show time, such as: since
yesterday, during the storm, before noon, etc. Example in a whole
sentence:
-They couldn't do anything during the storm.
-I will not do that, never in a million years!
