last thing he needed was anxiety. He became anxious about his anxiety. The
whole cycle perpetuated itself until Hank began to have one anxiety episode
after another. These usually took the form of chest pains, shortness of
breath, and a shaky feeling within. On several occasions, Hank rushed to
the emergency room. He had medical tests and medical workups done, all
of which determined that there was nothing wrong with his heart.
In our work together, Hank developed a mechanism for taming his
gremlin on the spot. He simply centered himself, used his Gremlin-Taming
mantra, and began to simply notice his gremlin. He allowed his gremlin five
to ten minutes of vicious monologue. He listened to all that his gremlin had
to say. Sometimes, he enjoyed playing with the option of accenting the
