Message from the Executive Director:
Keeping Our Society Invigorated and Relevant
As the days of Summer come to a close, we reflect back on a very productive few
month. We also look forward to a busy Fall schedule which includes a return to in
-person courses in our renovated space.
This Spring we had a very successful Give Kids A Smile (GKAS) event. As usual, our
co-chairs Drs. Joe Brofsky and Michael Shreck, joined by Dr. Doug Schildhaus, put
together an outstanding program. Due to ongoing Covid concerns, GKAS took
place at the Bayview Avenue School in Freeport, a smaller venue than our normal
Cradle of Aviation Museum location. For the first time in the 20-year history of
GKAS we provided sealants to the children. The kids all received our usual exams, fluoride treatments, oral
hygiene instruction and nutritional counselling as well. Once again, we partnered with the Long Beach
Lions Club to provide the children with eye exams. In all, approximately 500 students received over $70,000
worth of treatment. You can read and see more about this event on pages 14 and 15. Dr. Brofsky also held
th
a Mini-GKAS at the Five Town Early Childhood Center on June 14 .

The NYSDA House of Delegates took place June 9-12 in Saratoga Springs NY. Suffolk County Dental
Society’s Dr. Kevin Henner concluded his tenure as NYSDA President and handed the reins over to Dr.
th
James Galati of the 4 District Dental Society. During the meeting of the House two resolutions were
introduced by Nassau County. One resolution, which passed unanimously, deals with a parliamentary rule
change for the ADA. NYSDA will introduce our resolution at the ADA House this October. The other
resolution, which also passed unanimously, is to rename the NYSDA Distinguished Service Award the Dr.
Mark J. Feldman Distinguished Service Award. There was a video tribute to Mark Feldman, and he was
posthumously awarded both the NYSDA Distinguished Service Award and The William Jarvie and Harvey J.
Burkhart Award (the highest honor bestowed by the New York State Dental Association and presented in
recognition of great service rendered mankind in the field of dentistry). Never before have both awards
been given to the same person.
By the end of the summer, we completed the renovation of our office space in Garden City. This is the first
renovation of NCDS headquarters in 30 years and the Board and I are very proud of our new home. The
design allows for a more efficient use of the space. We can now accommodate 50% more attendees at our
meetings and courses. We created a dedicated exam room for Peer Review, cut our energy consumption
st
and carbon footprint with updated LED lighting and have transformed our condominium to 21 century
standards. There are photos of the new space on page 17, but I encourage you to come down to Oak
Street and see us in person, it would be my pleasure to show you around.
We have some great CE courses scheduled for the rest of the year. Topics include patient records,
marketing, cybersecurity, endodontics, Peer Review, OSHA, and Infection Control. There are four CPR
