KYLE W. SINGER
MEMORIAL AWARD
This award is presented, annually, in memory of Kyle W. Singer. It is bestowed upon the Kappa Leaguer who
best exemplifies the sprit, dedication, determination and personality that was apparent in Kyle at such a young
age.
Kyle was a Southfield Alumni Chapter Kappa Leaguer for more than three years. He joined the group as a fresh-
man, in high school, and immediately his leadership abilities could be discerned. He went on to become a two-
term Kappa League President and was so good at his job the program required very little adult intervention to
operate like a well oiled machine. Kyle required only to be pointed in the right direction and he took the Kappa
Leaguers on the journey to success by his leadership.
What is remembered by most, about Kyle, was the wry smile he would give when asked a question he knew
could incriminate him or his peers. After giving that smile, he would proceed to tell the truth about the issue no
matter what the consequences would present for him and the others. Although he possessed all of the qualities
one loved to see in a young man he was still a boy at heart. He had a happy-go-lucky manner about him and
was always comfortable having conversations with adults as well as his peers who did not possess his skill set.
He was well liked, by other Kappa Leaguers, and they followed his leadership and direction.
Kyle graduated from Southfield High School and matriculated at Morehouse College where he played football
and graduated Cum Laude in 1996. After graduation he lived in Philadelphia, with his mother, who had taken a
staff position at Temple University. At twenty-four years of age, he was moving into an apartment in
preparation for entrance into Southern University’s Law School, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, when he succumbed
to congenital heart failure on August 30, 1998.
Kyle became a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity on January 25, 1997, having been initiated into the Norris-
town (PA) Alumni Chapter. Although Kyle was with us for only a short period of time, he left an indelible im-
pression on everyone with whom he came in contact. So impactful was he in other’s lives, a contingent of Kap-
pas travelled to Detroit, from Pennsylvania, for his funeral after having known him less than a year. He was an
outstanding young man, with an infectious smile, and those of us who knew him are destined to look for his
qualities in every other young man we meet. His spirit will live on forever in the hearts of Southfield Alumni
Chapter Kappamen.
