Australian National
Surfing Museum in
Torquay, stopped by CSM on August 11.
Pictured here with staffmember Tom Dahnke, Rita
is an avid skater and surfer who is currently working
on her creative, practice-based PhD in surfing.
She spent several hours chatting with CSM staff
and taking notes on various museum procedures,op-
erations, and events.
We learned a lot from her as well!
In mid-October Jim Cerone and three of his pals
came up to CSM to view “Stars, Cars and Guitars,” and
pointed to the pair of huaraches that he loaned to the
museum for the exhibit.
The sandals are made from handcrafted leather, with
genuine rubber tire-tread soles. “Huaraches were the
perfect surfer footwear,” said Jim. “Durable and cheap.
I bought this pair for 75 cents on a trip to Mazatlan in
the early 60s.”
Jim and his Pacific Beach school chum Harold Reid
founded the Kanakas (Hawaiian for ‘beach boys’) surf
club in 1956, and they are still regulars at Tourmaline
Surf Park.
