East Bay Rental Housing Association
Executive Director
The Executive Director (known as the Association Executive, or AE, within EBRHA) will lead the staff,
members, and volunteers to expand EBRHA’s membership, its influence, and its impact. EBRHA has a
stable base of 1,500 members and sound financials, with a budget over $800,000, and we are poised for
exponential growth. Historically our focus has been on Oakland and as a result, our members are pri-
marily affiliated with Oakland. However, there is great need and opportunity to expand our membership
and our services throughout Alameda and Contra Costa Counties, where there are no other organizations
serving that need.
The Board is looking for an enterprising AE with the vision and skill to build EBRHA in the following key
results areas:
• Grow membership through expansion, increased market share, and renewals.
• Increase revenue through magazine advertising, events, and membership so that additional
revenue can be invested in advocacy and member services.
• Work with the Board to implement goals and timelines for the strategic plan.
• Ensure an organized, efficient, and healthy workplace.
• Equip and enable Board and members to take the lead on Advocacy.
The AE’s responsibilities include leadership of EBHRA’s, finances, programs, and four full-time staff. The
AE will ensure sound finance and accounting practices, and disciplined practices for sales and renewals of
memberships, advertising and sponsorships. The AE will ensure programs, services, and publications
effective and compelling for members and prospective members throughout our service area. As the
head of staff, the AE will create a healthy work environment, modeling legal and effective HR practices,
setting goals and priorities for staff; and creating a culture of respect, support, accountability, and results.
Speaking and public relations are important aspects of this role. The AE must communicate with profes-
sionalism, clarity and diplomacy to promote EBRHA and advance our mission with media, government
officials, members/prospects, and other community leaders. While Board members will take the lead on
advocacy, the AE will ensure EBHRA is well-represented at meetings with city/county elected officials and
government agencies, and will ensure our members are informed and equipped to speak with their elect-
ed officials on relevant laws and regulations. The AE will also develop and promote alliances with other
organizations.
The AE reports to the Board of Directors and works with the Board to develop and implement a business
plan and a long-range strategic framework which advances the mission. The AE also will work with the
Board in selection and recruitment of new Board members.
