 Directed Electrical Maintenance (DEM):

DEM is a new initiative from the transformation cell of Hyderabad Division; DEM is
envisaged and implemented initially on HT installations over the Hyderabad Division.
Directed Maintenance is to tackle staff shortage and expenditure control issue. The
strategical point is effective planning of transportation, materials (Spares/Tools &
ladders) and manpower so that a team can concentrate on one unit at a time, either
Station and LC gate or colony in all aspects so that there won‟t be any need to revisit
that unit (Station/Colony) for next 6 months.

Case Study:

DEM Implementation on HT installations over Hyderabad Division

Hyderabad Division of South Central Railway is entrusted with the responsibility of HT
33KV installations which are catering 40 no‟s of LT 11KV Sub-Stations. These LT
Sub-Stations in turn feed very important Administrative buildings i.e. Rail Nilayam, Lekha
Bhavan and Sanchalan Bhavan and also two National level Training institutes such as
IRISET and IRIFM.

In the month of July 2019, all the structures and panels were inspected through
Thermography with Thermal imaging camera and identified the hotspots and their
degree of deterioration. Depending upon the degree of deterioration a calendar has
been chalked out and subsequently implemented by August 2019. On observing the
trend of power failures, it is known that the graph of power failures has drastically come
down from Aug - 2019 to Nov - 2019 compared to the last year failures for the same
period.
