Coupling up and uncoupling trailers (ARTICS)
UNCOUPLING OF TRAILERS (with a Split uncouple)
1 Collision Drivers must always be aware of other traffic and pedestrians when performing
this task. It should also be conducted on legal and level ground.
2 Slips Trips and Coupling up to a trailer or uncoupling from a trailer must be carried out correctly and in a
Falls systematic order. Artic drivers need to become familiar with either of the two procedures
listed below. Skip drivers from serial 00 and RORO drivers from serial 00. During the
process of coupling or uncoupling if the driver is interrupted or distracted away from the
task in hand then he or she should take a moment before returning to the task gather
their thoughts and then re-address the procedure. This will prevent the driver from
making mistakes and forgetting aspects of the coupling or uncoupling procedure.
Always wear the correct PPE when performing this task as stated in the company
handbook and the risk assessment above.

Note: Apply the vehicle handbrake, turn off the engine, use 3 points on contact to climb
out of the cab, close the door and ensure you are wearing the correct PPE
