• The church is empowered by the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8).
• Whether or not you’re part of a local congregation, you’re part of
the church—it’s the Body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:12-31).
• All members of the church have a unique blend of spiritual gifts
that can be used to serve God and others (Romans 12:6).
• All believers are unified in Jesus. They may align with different
denominations and may not agree with one another on all doctrinal
issues, but they’re still brothers and sisters (Galatians 3:28).
• Sharing the story of Jesus is central to the mission of the church,
as is living in a way that demonstrates the power of God to transform
us (Philippians 1:27).
• There is great benefit that comes from being a part of a local con-
gregation, as well as the chance to serve others (Hebrews 10:25).
Are all local congregations healthy? Unfortunately, no. And no local
congregation is perfect. But connecting with and committing to a local
church is an expectation of someone following Jesus.
And the source of lots of good stuff—like fellowship.
3. What is fellowship?
The Greek word translated “fellowship” is koinonia, and it means
communion, relationship, and sharing in common. When the Greeks first
used the word, it was to describe partnering in business.
Jesus-followers who are in fellowship together serve one another and
others as well. They become part of a loving community.
And Jesus urged his first disciples to do just that:
“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you,
so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are
my disciples, if you love one another” (John 13:34-35).
