6. Praying the fives.
There’s no hard and fast formula for prayer—and shouldn’t be. Re-
lationships don’t have formulas for conversation. There’s a natural flow
when friends talk—the focus shifts from one person to the other, topics
aren’t covered in any particular order, there’s no formal outline to follow.
The same is true for conversations with God.
Which can be scary for disciples who haven’t prayed much in the
past. They wonder where to start, how to get past being intimidated to be
having a chat with God.
Do this: Pray the fives.
It’s a formula, but not one you’ll follow for long. Think of it as train-
ing wheels until you get comfortable with prayer and develop your own
rhythm. While taking a walk, or during a commute, take 10 to 15 minutes
to pray through five key areas of life.
Use the fingers on one hand to remind you to include…
Thumb: Praise
Yes, you’re having a conversation—but it’s not a conversation be-
tween equals. Honor God by acknowledging who he is and what he’s done
in your life. If you’re outside, praise him for his majestic creation. If you’re
surrounded by people, praise him for his creativity in crafting such com-
plex, incredible humans. Try to think of five things that you want to praise
him about.
Index finger: Urgent needs for family and friends
Whatever’s top of mind, whatever issue is current and compelling,
address it. Tell God what you’re thinking and feeling. Ask for help dealing
with the issues. Again, what are five urgent and specific needs—they can
be healing, a financial need, or something that someone needs.
Middle finger: Thanksgiving
Consider five specific things for which you are thankful. Nice weather,
an encouraging conversation, a pay raise, a new relationship, or some-
thing that you have learned. What items are you thankful about?
