aware of what their particular values are, and realize that they do need to put those into practice
every part of their lives, then the better the world will be for all of us. So that's really what we're
about in World Values Day. We believe that living by our values, by positive values, it's not only
beneficial to ourselves, but also benefits the people around us, and rippling out to the whole
community and the whole world. It gives us also greater tolerance. It's not just a direct benefit in
terms of we feel good about ourselves, other people feel good, but we're in a world riven by conflict,
there's conflict and division all around us. Almost wherever we are, sadly and one of the particular
value of values, is to help us understand, and at least have some common ground with people who
we don't agree with, which is very important. Because if we just shout and, are angry with each
other, then you know, we're never going to make any practice, even if we just think the other
people are wrong, we still need to be able to talk. So that's why that is so important that we can
spread the word about WVD and values generally, because that's the objective around the world
even more widely, and that in the years to come.
On the theme of this year’s campaign “Values in Action”, we are suggesting that everybody asked
themselves and questions about, are we living our own values? And the values of our organizations
were relevant to the fool in our lives every day? And if we're not, and let's face it, most of us don't
manage to do it all the time. So if we're not really what's stopping us? Is it we forget? We're all a
bit forgetful about our values. It's true, we can place them. Of course, we all have that problem,
too. The main problem, the big problem facing us all really around the world, let alone those that
are trying to practice values, is that negativity and cynicism that we see all around us. And that's
the big threat, the big issue that this values campaign is taking on. The way it happens, as we all
know, is when we tell ourselves, that nothing can be done. The problems of the world are just too
big, the problems of our local community are too, everything's too difficult. We think that we fall
into this trap. We think if we have good values, we think, oh, yeah, I'm fine. I've got good values.
But everyone else has terrible values. They all have their selfish, they're out for themselves. They're
greedy. We come to think that the whole society is so bad, and so corrupt, that we can't do anything.
And so we give up, we don't engage we step back, we don't take that step out and try and change
things. We say, what's the point? But actually, the truth is that other people aren't like that other
people that have mostly good values.
Actually, we know this, when we talk to most of the people, we know this from the family, from
our circle of friends and research. There's been so much research done in the last few years, which
tells us exactly the same thing, that most people have a good positive values. But the big problem
for most people is that they don't think other people do they're cynical about other people's values.
That's what the research tells us to that we have this negative view of other people.
And that's one of the big things that holds us back. And if we can overcome that, then we can
actually begin to reach out and engage people in a way that we're not doing at the moment. So it
all it takes really is for us to make a start. Just to reach out to other people to do what we're doing
here today to make a connection, to start talking, to start acting to do exactly what Manjola and all
are doing in your different ways to come together in a conference, to come together in different
ways to take action and to support each other. WVD caused us to put our values into action. And
little by little we can turn the tide on negativity, cynicism, and the selfish society we see around us
and all the problems we see which are so obvious. Since we're all good people, we can't actually,
make a difference to those problems. Of course we can, we just need to believe it.
