Non-competency questions are hard to ‘read’ in terms of what they are
trying to get at. Apply the same principles as you do to competency-based
questions when framing your answers.
n Listen carefully and ask for clarification if you need to.
n Use CaR to frame your answer; describe the context, the action you
took and the result in response to any question that gives you the
chance to do so.
n Try to relate questions back to actual examples, where you can
describe what you really did.
n Aim to be reasonably objective when asked to self-evaluate; present
yourself as honest but confident in your abilities.
n Don’t make things up or pretend to have knowledge or expertise when
you don’t; your credibility, once damaged, is extremely difficult to
regain in an interview situation.
