MEET OUR NEW ASSISTANT DIRECTOR
Katherine Gomes
Takes on New Role at Library
Our new Assistant Director isn’t new. Well, at least to us. Kate
Gomes has been our Technical Services Library Associate since
2012. She grew up in Mattapoisett, earned her BA in English
from the University of Massachusetts in Dartmouth, and currently
lives in her college hometown. We caught up with her recently to
talk about her life, her promotion, and what’s ahead.
Q: What were the primary responsibilities of your last job?
KG: Adding and subtracting. My last position focused on cataloging new material. We
receive about 1,000 new books, DVDs, magazines, and databases each month. That keeps
our collections fresh and interesting. And, to make room for the new materials, we have to
cycle others out.
Q: And your new role?
KG: I’ll be involved in all aspects of the Library’s activities: programming, community
outreach, customer service, and staff development. During the pandemic, we experienced
many personnel changes due to layoffs, furloughs, resignations, and retirements. We’re very
focused on building a dynamic new team. Our goal is to be the best Library we can be for
the town of Plymouth.
Q: You can’t talk to a Librarian without asking about books. What’s the last one
you read?
KG: I’m almost afraid to say this: “Silence of the Lambs” by Thomas Harris. I went to a
conference for horror writers, then found the audio book in the Library’s online database
and listened to it while I cleaned house and commuted to work. Trust me, every sentence is
horrifying.
Q: Is horror your genre?
KG: I’m usually a pretty eclectic reader. Lately I’ve been into a lot of romantic comedies.
Next, I’m revisiting “Fire and Blood” by George R. R. Martin to brush up on House Targaryen
history to watch “House of the Dragons.”
