Course Procedures
Situation: You want to be sure to deliver your instruc-
tion while using procedures as close to the state of the
art as your circumstances will allow.
Suddenly the house lights dim, the orchestra plays a fanfare,
and the instructor marches into the classroom bearing—
Ta da!—examination papers.
Instr: Today we’re going to have a mid-term exam!
You: (Shouting over the pandemonium) Wait a
minute! You never said anything about a mid-
term!
Instr: Come now. By now you should know that
courses come equipped with exams.
You: But a mid-term? At the end of the first week?
And without warning?
Instr: Oh, stop your whining. Now come up here
and rap out a five-minute description of the
theory of relativity.
