                                        task analysis 61

There are two common ways to analyze a task, by listing and
               by flowcharting.

Listing. One way to make the components of a task visible
is to simply list them as you would build a shopping list. Here
               are two examples:

Example #1: Task: Start an IV.

When initiated? When patient’s chart says to do it.

                 1. Read patient’s chart.

                 2. If IV is not called for, stop.

                 3. If IV is called for, collect equipment.

                 4. Get material to be administered.

                 5. Locate patient.

                 6. Verify that correct patient has been located.

                 7. Prepare patient psychologically for the procedure.

                 8. Sterilize site where needle is to be inserted.

                 9. Locate vein.
                 . . . and so on.

When completed? When IV is running according to require-
                 ments.

Example #2: Task: Clean spark plugs.
When initiated? a. Plugs are dirty.
                                    b. Customer asks.
