Foreword to Kwon Sook-ja’s Solo Exhibition

Kim Chang-rak (Sejong University) By the late Professor

In today’s harsh realities and the complex dynamics of the art world, it is extremely difficult for a young artist to remain
true to themselves and establish a genuine artistic identity.

Among those rare few, Kwon Sook-ja stands out as a pure and sincere artist, who continues to pursue her own artistic
                 world despite such challenges.
From the time she entered university, she devoted herself to the fundamentals—both in her undergraduate and grad-
uate studies. Even during her tenure as a teaching assistant, she was already presenting remarkable works.

Early on, through her small-scale pieces, she revealed a unique artistic world expressed with honesty, which drew
attention. This was evidence of her possessing an exceptional literary sensibility.

As she became a university assistant, she began to translate the literary sensibilities that had long stirred within her
into visual form—a serious attempt to give shape to her inner world.

In essence, she sought to sing her unique song on a larger, freer canvas, expanding upon what she had already ex-
                 pressed in her earlier works.
However, she came to realize that harmonizing concrete nature with a literary inner world on the same canvas, cen-
tered around a unified focal point, is no easy task.

Thus began her long and solitary struggle, filled with much reflection and many hours before the easel.
Though she has achieved a certain level of success, elements of experimentation still remain. Nevertheless, I firmly
believe that with her diligence and insight, her artistic vision will soon come to full fruition.

This solo exhibition will serve not only to show the public her artistic growth, but also to allow her to reflect and con-
                 solidate her research thus far.
I sincerely hope that this exhibition will become a stepping stone for her to blossom into an even more outstanding
                 artist.
