When Collateral Damage Is Greater Than The Target—
Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols, both ex-Army
soldiers, plotted the worse homegrown terrorist attack in
U.S. history. They wanted to destroy a federal symbol.
On the morning of April 19, 1995, McVeigh parked
a rented Ryder truck in front of the Alfred P. Murrah
Federal Building in downtown Oklahoma City. Inside the
truck was an enormous man-made bomb. McVeigh exited
the truck and got into his getaway car. At precisely 9:02
a.m., he detonated the bomb.
Sure they accomplished their goal of destroying a
federal symbol, but at what price? The blast destroyed
the entire north wall of the Murrah Federal Building
(nearly half the building). Dozens of cars were incinerated
and more than 300 nearby buildings were damaged or
destroyed. 168 people were killed 19 children. Over 500
innocent people were injured.
During the September 11 attacks of 2001, 2,977
victims and 19 hijackers were killed and more than 6,000
others were injured. The immediate deaths included 265
on the four planes (including the terrorists), 2,606 in the
World Trade Center and in the surrounding area, and
125 at the Pentagon. When earth-shaking events take
place anywhere in the world, there is always collateral
damage. —It’s All Collateral Damage!
When Collateral Damage Is The Result Of Abuse Of Power—
In 1993 Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) agents tried
to serve a search warrant at the Branch Davidian compound
and their Mt. Carmel Church Headquarters in Waco, Texas.
