for all the conferences to meet here. It is the conglomeration of different
intonational organizations and specialized agencies that provide an added edge
over any other city. Around 4,000 conferences are held during the year in all
the different organizations, and it brings together people from all over the
world who spend their money and contribute to the economy. This large sector
is further enhanced by the presence of over 70,000 people who are members of
the international community.

The Palais des Nations in Geneva is fully equipped with the latest technology
for conferencing and with the presence of the International Telecommunica-
tions Union assisted in establishing up-to-date state of art systems for
communication. "Communication has made the world so interdependent and
it is the basis of cooperation at the present time", mentioned the Director-
General. In the crisis-prevention diplomacy, our telecommunications system
providing video conferences with our people around the world is proving in-
valuable.

Describing the programme of the 50th Anniversary in 1995, Mr. Petrovsky
looks at Geneva with confidence and faith as an important venue for the
United Nations which will welcome thousands of visitors next year.
