Мr. President,
Ladies and Gentlemen,

1. It is а pleasure to welcome you at the Palais des Nations. This historic
building is the heart of the extensive system of the UN organizations in
Geneva, and it is also а part of this beautiful city. It provides the link
between Geneva and the international community making this city one of the
major capitals of multilateral diplomacy. I wish to take this opportunity to
express my gratitude to the people of Geneva for the support they provide to
the United Nations. Though Switzerland is not а formal member of the World
Organization it makes а significant and welcome contribution to its work.

2. Your meeting at the Palais des Nations is one of the first events
dedicated to the 50th Anniversary of the UN. This anniversary gives us an
opportunity to reflect, to evaluate what had been done bу the Organization
during half а century of its existence and what is to bе done. We live in а
turbulent period of global change which requires the UN to constantly re-
examine and readjust its activities.
