Bringing the Concept to Life

business leaders in Davos and here in Geneva. There already is an example of
an organizational structure to facilitate contacts between the UN and the
business community - the New York Business Council for the United Nations.
Тhis organization was set up in 1957 and is primarily organizing meetings
between the corporate chief executives and the UN senior officials. А similar
permanent organizational structure could bе created in Europe, perhaps here,
in Geneva, where most of the Europe-based UN agencies are located. Such an
organization could facilitate contacts between businessmen, diplomats and
politicians, including the highest level officials. Heads of States and
Governments are often visiting Geneva and many of them express their interest
in meetings with the business community. It could also encourage private
support of the UN development and other projects in various fields, including
protection of human rights, assistance to the refugees, etc.

                  8. It appears, that instead of а welcome address I started talking about
substantive issues. Му only excuse is that this audience which has considerable
international experience is well prepared to share my concerns about the
cooperation between the UN and the business community.

                  9. I would like to wish you success and to express my believe that your
forthcoming meeting with Ambassador Brunner, one of the most experienced
and brilliant Swiss and UN diplomats, will provide you with deep insight into
the political problems which the United Nations in now facing.

                  Thank you for your attention.
