CANTON GLARUS - THE MOST MYSTERIOUS

                                                   CANTON,

                                                                           By Evelina RIOUKHINA

Have you ever visited the Canton of Glarus? If not, I hope you'll be tempted to go after
reading this article. At least, that's the impression I got after our discussion at Carrefour
International. The Canton proved to be of such interest, and above all an event there
attracted the attention of our participants, as well as the staff of the Cité des seniors
whom we invited to attend, that I decided to go there specially, to write this article and
            report on my visit.

There are many things that are unique to the Canton of Glarus, or that are here and
nowhere else: the totally enigmatic area with a curious geographical phenomenon,
which was added to the list of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites not long ago. It is
called the Swiss Tectonic Arena Sardona and it is an enigma for geologists. This
phenomenon is sometimes called the Glarus overthrust to describe where the 250
million-year-old strata have edged their way above younger rocks. No one can explain
how the ancient stone formations overlie those millions of years younger, and it is
particularly intriguing to see the 22x19-meter wide rock window between the layers
            (called Martin’s Hole).
