And there are many other absolutely unique things about this canton. However, the
main reason for my summer trip was to go to the ‘end of the world’, to an area that is
totally inaccessible (at least by public transport), and to literally go ‘inside’ or ‘through’
the middle of the mountain. How is this possible? Yes, there is a 3 kms tunnel that leads
to the fascinating system of dams - the Limmerensee dam and, 700 metres higher up,
to the Muttsee dam, the highest in Europe. This season, the place suddenly became
known thanks to a picture on INSTAGRAM that fascinated the world (see photo here),
and soon it will be a popular hiking destination, but for now it's pretty much preserved.
The hike was pretty daring, but the adventure and what I managed to see there and
discover - struck me deeply for its beauty, but also impressed me by its innovation and
technology.
As I said, there is no public transport to get there. If you travel by train to the Canton
terminal, then you'll have to walk 7km to the little fully automated cable car that takes
you steeply up to the tunnel to ‘pierce’ the mountain. But if you're travelling by car, go as
far as Linthal and continue straight to the mountain - and you will soon see that the
mountain cuts you off, and you will feel like you are really at the end of the road, ‘at the
end of the world’, with no way out and no further access.
