A line for direct casting of strip was put into operation at
the Chinese iron and steel works
The Chinese steel company Rizhao
Steel announced the commissioning of
a fifth direct casting line of the Arvedi
Endless Strip Production (ESP) type with a
capacity of 2.2 million tons per year at its
iron and steel plant in Rizhao, southeast
Shandong province.
Primetals Technologies, part of the
Japanese Mitsubishi Heavy Industries
(MHI) group, was the developer of this
project and the equipment supplier. They
had previously installed four similar lines
at the metallurgical plant.
Arvedi ESP technology combines
steel casting and hot rolling to reduce
energy consumption and carbon dioxide
emissions. According to Primetals Technologies, the production line is only 162 meters long.
The new line is optimized for the production of ultra-thin hot-rolled strip with a thickness
of 0.6 mm and a width of up to 1300 mm from ultra-soft steel grades. These products will be
intended to replace cold rolled products in some applications. At the same time, this line will
also be able to produce low-alloy high-strength sheet for the automotive industry.
