The Pediatric Oncology service at Soroka Medical
Center provides excellent care for our young
Pediatric patients with malignant diseases and benign
hematology as well as autologous bone marrow
Oncology Service transplantation for children from birth until young
adulthood.
Background The Population of the Negev is the youngest in the
country and is characterized by unique morbidity
characteristics. This situation requires Soroka to
be able to offer the most comprehensive range
of medical services possible. The Negev’s diverse
population, which includes veteran Israelis, new
immigrants from around the world, and Bedouin
who often live in communities with minimal
infrastructures, demands that at Saban Pediatric
Medical Center we can provide a full range of the
most advanced diagnostic, clinical, and therapeutic
services with sensitivity to cultural differences,
treating each patient and family according to their
needs. Moreover, the prevalence of consanguineous
marriage (marriage between close relatives) typical
of Negev Bedouin also leads to a high rate of rare and
severe medical conditions not often seen outside
our center. Our medical staff must be familiar with
the many hematological and oncological diseases
found in this population.
The Pediatric Oncology service includes the
in-patient Hemato-Oncology Department, the very
active Ambulatory Care Center, and multidisciplinary
Hematology and long-term Oncological Recovery
Clinics. The activity of the service has doubled in the
last decade; currently, more than 700 admissions
each year to the in-patient ward, and there are over
4,500 visits at the ambulatory care center.
