\ What’s happening in the world…?
Did you know that…?
• Approximately half the world’s population still exists on the equivalent of 2 US
dollars per day.
• A primary feature of the global fashion industry is the suppression of decent
employment – countless women, from cotton pickers to seamstresses, are
employed in conditions of slavery.
• A fair trade label is an international certification awarded to a range of
products which are audited throughout their production and supply chain
process to guarantee that workers have not been exploited, the environment
has not been polluted, workers have received fair recompense which grants
them rights and dignity, and have not been party to slavery or child slavery in
the process.
• In February 2022, eight children claiming they were used as slave labor
on cocoa plantations in the Ivory Coast launched legal action against the
world’s largest chocolate companies. They allege that the corporations aided
and abetted the illegal enslavement of children on cocoa farms. They are
demanding compensation for forced labor, negligence and causing emotional
damage.
• During the past decade there has been a 1000% rise in the sale of fair trade
products worldwide.
