16 Days in England, continues from page 11We
made our way back to the hotel just in time to find
out that the Queen had passed away. Since our
coach tour began the next morning and that took
us to Winchester, our home base for the next nine
days, this news didn't affect our trip much.

The Winchester Royal hotel was built in the 16th
century but updated to "most modern comforts"
(you will understand this choice of words later).
When we think of history here in the US thoughts of
Belle Meade and other plantations come to mind
but this hotel was built before we were even a

The second night there we finally got our fish and
chips at a pub that opened in the year 1002! (
        editor's note: That's not a typo.)

I was seated in front of a fireplace hearth from the
original building! Winchester's rich history dates
back to the Roman era and it served as England's
capital until it was replaced by London. Our hotel's
location was within easy walking distance of many
        restaurants, museums, and attractions.

16 Days, 2 People and Carry -on Luggage Only

I will mention, now, that after hearing the horror
stories about dealing with baggage at Heathrow we Don't be surprised --Authentic Fish

suggested that we should plan on washing some
items in the hotel room sink and hanging them to
dry which was an excellent plan except-- our
"mostly modernized" room did not have air
conditioning. That meant it took three days for our

We were very lucky that the weather was near
perfect for our entire trip. We visited Brooklands, a the Concorde
