The long and the short of it--honoring Vets,
riding in cars of all ages, at the Franklin parade.
What is Vet eran's Day?
First, it's not the same as Memorial Day, which honors
those who have died in America's service. Veterans'
Day honors the living. The United States is currently
home to approximately 16.5 million veterans, about
6.4% of the nation's adult population.
According to data from the 2021 Census, present day
veterans are overwhelmingly men, representing 14%
of the men living in the United States. There are 2
million women who have served. Among the adult
females in the United States only 1.5% are veterans.
Originally known as Armistice Day, the first
observance was in 1919 on the one year anniversary
of the 1918 Armistice that ended WW I. In 1947, the
1st unofficial celebration of Veteran's Day was held in
Birmingham, Alabama, organized by Raymond Weeks,
anklin, Tennessee
a veteran of WWII, who wanted to honor all veterans.
