                Where t o begin? A  lat he, per t he dict ionary,  is ?a machine used for working met al, wood
               or ot her mat erial by t urning it  in a horizont al axis while holding a cut t ing t ool against  it ?.
               Simple enough- but  it  belies t he ut ilit y of t he device. There was an old saying t hat  t he lat he

               was t he only machine t hat  could reproduce it self!  This was possibly t rue for t he earliest
               examples but  not  so much for t he comput er cont rolled marvels of t oday. Mine however
               would be closer t o t he " earlier " versions.


                My int erest  in lat hes (and machine t ools in general) began pret t y early on. I guess I was a
               born t inkerer. I always preferred t o fixing t hings rat her t han buying new. Continued on p. 36
